DOOM

First-person shooter

DOOM is a first-person shooter video game developed and self-published by id Software on December 10, 1993. In the game, the player assumes the role of a space marine, popularly known as the Doomguy, fighting his way through hordes of invading demons in military bases on the moons of Mars and in hell. The player traverses each of the game's levels to find an exit to the next level or kill a final boss, while fighting demons and possessed undead humans.

User reviews

Users appreciate that the DOOM Chrome extension brings the classic game to Chrome OS with support for importing WAD files and nostalgic gameplay. However, multiple users report the plugin often shows a 'not supported' error, particularly on some Chromebooks and Chrome Flex OS. There are compatibility issues with certain WAD files and mouse control problems where mouse locking is faulty. The absence of game music and lack of customization options detracts from the experience. Despite flaws, users find it a cool and novel way to play Doom on a browser platform.
Pros
  • Successfully runs original Doom game on Chrome OS, providing nostalgia for players.
  • Allows import of Doom 1 & 2 WAD files and supports playing Doom games on Chromebook and Chrome Flex OS.
  • Easy access to WAD files through Google Drive integration.
  • Good idea and implementation as a Chrome extension allowing Doom gameplay without needing traditional app stores.
Cons
  • Plugin often shows 'not supported' error on various Chrome OS devices, causing accessibility issues.
  • Inability to open certain WAD files like Liminal Doom, MyHouse, and Doom 64 due to compatibility problems.
  • Mouse controls are problematic; mouse locking doesn't work well making gameplay uncomfortable.
  • Lack of game music and other features like extra blood particles leads to incomplete experience.
  • No button remapping option available, limiting control customization.

Hey, I'm on Chrome OS but the plugin keeps telling me it isn't supported? Can you help?

Great! The original game runs perfectly, but I tried to play Liminal Doom and MyHouse and it can't open the WAD files...

This extension doesn't receive enough love. While I do have Doom 1 & 2 on my Chromebook in addition to Delta Touch where I can play Doom 64 on the Chromebook, this was going to be an issue with Chrome Flex OS because the Play Store is not supported in that version. This extension addresses that issue of being able to play Doom games in Chrome Flex OS and I was able to import the Doom 2 WAD on my Chromebook but it seems like I was not successful with the Doom 64 WAD (I think I got it from GOG instead of Steam or Windows). The nice thing is that if you put your WADs in your Google Drive, you could easily access those to import to play the Doom games in addition to other community created WADs (haven't tried that out as of this review).
