Tabs Backup & Restore

Keep manual or automatic backups of all tabs*, and restore on demand. Can also export backup file to disk to restore later, or to another profile, even on another computer or OS, as long as it has Tabs Backup & Restore installed. *(See description)

Tabs Backup & Restore is a powerful Chrome extension designed for users who want to keep their browser tabs safe and accessible. It allows for both manual and automatic backups of all open tabs across all windows, saving the current URLs so you can restore your browsing sessions whenever needed. Auto-backups can be scheduled at your preferred frequency with a limit on how many backups are retained.

You can also export session backups as human-readable text files to your disk, which then can be imported later or on any other Chrome profile or computer that has Tabs Backup & Restore installed. This ensures your browsing sessions remain secure even in case of profile corruption or device change. Note that internal browser and local file URLs have restoration restrictions due to browser limitations. The extension is user-friendly, featuring an instructional slideshow interface, and it respects your privacy by storing all backup data client-side.

User reviews

Tabs Backup & Restore is praised for reliably backing up and restoring tabs across multiple windows, offering editable exports and working well alongside other add-ons. Users appreciate automatic periodic snapshots and session management options. However, common issues include a confusing import interface, lack of delete functionality for duplicate saves, and some unexpected behavior in session replacement. Filename formatting and compatibility with newer Firefox versions have also been noted as drawbacks. Overall, it is valued by users needing robust tab backup with some room for interface improvement.
Pros
  • Effectively backs up and restores tabs, including large numbers and multiple windows.
  • Exports session data in a readable and editable text format that preserves window groupings.
  • Offers options to replace or add sessions when restoring tabs.
  • Does not interfere with other Firefox add-ons or tab managers.
  • Automatically saves snapshots of open tabs periodically and maintains multiple backups.
Cons
  • Import interface is somewhat confusing and not very intuitive.
  • Lacks a delete function for managing duplicate saved sessions.
  • The date-time format in filenames is not ideal, especially due to filesystem restrictions.
  • Some users report it not working properly in newer Firefox versions.
  • The 'replace existing session' feature may behave unexpectedly or close current sessions unexpectedly.

I haven't tried to import the export file onto my new-used, fast laptop, but it does the session display in a readable--and *editable*-- format well enough. And even the exported text file could be edited if word wrap is off. Though i can't think of why changes wouldn't be easier in the ff interface. The import looks a little confusing, esp weird is the 'Switch to Export,' which seems to only occasionally, quickly shows the Export pane. But it's a clean export/import, so I won't transfer any tagging or such by any other add-ons I tried, didn't like and removed, esp the container ones (though having 2 separate containers with 2 separate logins to the same site would be handy). This has a clean, simple interface and those extra sessions I worried about, they're the auto-backups i turned om, though the max is 10. Hopefully this add-on is too hands-off to interfere with any other tab mgr add-ons I run. But this is almost certainly the add-on I want to transfer my 300+ tabs on 14 windows to my new system (I may look at some others). Thanks, mate.
