User reviews

Todaii: Learn Japanese is highly regarded for its extensive learning materials and interactive features that support effective language immersion through news articles and embedded tools. Users appreciate the ease of looking up words and the variety of content for improving vocabulary, reading, and listening skills. However, updates have introduced UI challenges and technical issues like difficult word highlighting and unreliable translations. Subscription management has caused dissatisfaction due to ads appearing for paid users and limited free access. Despite these drawbacks, the app remains a well-liked comprehensive resource for serious Japanese learners.
Pros
  • Provides a wide range of useful features for learning Japanese including reading articles, vocabulary practice, JLPT tests, flashcards, videos with transcripts, and an integrated dictionary.
  • Helps learners improve reading and vocabulary skills through immersion with contemporary news articles suitable for intermediate to advanced levels.
  • Allows easy lookup of words and kanji by clicking or highlighting, supporting natural and interactive learning.
  • Includes audio files and pronunciation support to aid listening and speaking skills.
  • Offers a comprehensive and convenient all-in-one app experience for Japanese learners, often praised for its content and educational value.
Cons
  • Recent app design changes have introduced usability issues such as difficulty with word translation, less convenient furigana toggling, and UI elements that are too small on certain devices.
  • Problems with highlighting and selecting words to get definitions; the selection can be frustrating and often deselects or highlights large portions unintentionally.
  • Subscription and premium content issues including ads showing despite active subscriptions, inability to restore purchases, refusal of refunds, and restrictive paywall limits such as limiting free article reads per day.
  • Translation features are sometimes unreliable, providing incorrect or untranslated content without saving user translations.
  • Lack of synchronization of user data (e.g., notebooks, tests) across multiple devices even with premium subscription.

This used to be a great app, but they got rid of their organized flashcard sets. I tried premium to see if they became a paid item, but still couldn't find them. Besides that, the premium content didn't even load properly. I requested a refund because I didn't want to pay for content that I can't access, but the refund was rejected. The app is still decent for practicing reading, but it used to be much better for general studying, too.

Updated again for latest version - The "unable to save progress on practice test" bug was fixed, though some tests and reading practice are still missing. I still want the ability to toggle Furigana from anywhere in an article back. It really distracts from the article to have to scroll up to toggle, then scroll back down to find where I left off, over and over again. I will still use this app to read news occasionally, but it's not as convenient for my intermediate reading practice anymore.
