Smarter categorization for your shopping trips, automatically

Monarch Money | Retail purchase sync is a powerful Chrome extension designed to enhance your budgeting experience by automatically categorizing and splitting retail purchases from major retailers like Amazon. It eliminates the hassle of lumping mixed items into broad categories by using AI to analyze each order's details such as item name, merchant, price, and purchase date.

With this extension, your Amazon orders from the past three months are synced and categorized accurately, with support to sync fresh purchases every 24 hours and manual backfill for historical order analysis. Features include smarter categorization, cleaner budgets and reports, reduced manual editing, and the ability to add notes for transaction details. Currently supporting Amazon US with Target coming soon, this tool keeps your financial data organized effortlessly, adhering to privacy by not sharing personal information beyond necessary transaction data.

User reviews

Users praise the Monarch Money Retail purchase sync extension for accurately auto-categorizing Amazon purchases and enhancing budgeting by adding detailed transaction notes. The setup is mostly seamless and greatly improves visibility into spending compared to generic 'Shopping' categories. However, syncing older transactions beyond three months is unreliable or fails for many, leading to frustration. Some users face sync failures without clear errors and issues with two-factor authentication accounts. There is a desire for broader vendor support beyond Amazon. Overall, it is seen as a valuable addition that significantly improves the Monarch user experience.
Pros
  • Automatically categorizes Amazon purchases accurately, saving time and improving expense tracking.
  • Seamless and easy setup, with the extension working mostly "out of the box."
  • Adds significant value to Monarch Money by providing detailed purchase notes and better categorization than default "Shopping" category.
  • Helps users see detailed transaction information, improving budgeting and spending awareness.
  • Positive user feelings about the addition, many expressing enthusiasm and recommending it to other Monarch users.
Cons
  • Syncing only works reliably for the last 3 months of transactions; syncing older purchase history is problematic or fails.
  • Some users experience syncing failures or issues without clear error messages.
  • Two-factor authentication in financial institutions can cause syncing problems, necessitating manual updates.
  • Occasional glitches or delays during syncing, especially with large numbers of transactions (e.g., over 180).
  • Limited vendor support currently, with requests for extending support beyond Amazon (e.g., Canadian Amazon, AliExpress, Walmart).
Recent reviews
I think Monarch has potential to be a one stop shop for simple personal budgeting however accounts that use a two factor authenticator (i.e. financial institutions) fail when syncing so unless you go in and update manually each time you open the app/website it really doesn't give you a full picture of your accounts.
