ويتم اللعب بملء أحد المربعات التي تتشكل من تقاطع خطين عموديين مع عموديين أفقيين بإما X أو O، وعادةً، X يبدأ أولاً. 
اللاعب الذي ينجح بتكوين 3 رموز متشابهة عمودياً أو أفقياً أو بشكل قطري يكون الفائز.
