First translated by English Catholic scholars in exile — the New Testament at Rheims in 1582, the Old Testament at Douay in 1609 and 1610 — and later revised by Bishop Richard Challoner in the mid-1700s, the Douay-Rheims has been the Bible entrusted to English-speaking Catholics for over four hundred years.
