## Description

Learn colour by making your eyes disagree with the pixels. Explore perception, light, mixing and accessibility through experiments and design challenges.

Colour Studio is a human-centred learning environment for design students, educators and curious makers who want to understand not only what colour is, but how it behaves.

The curriculum progresses through four connected phases:

Everyday experience
Explore how colour communicates emotion, identity and cultural meaning.

The perceptual glitch
Use analogue materials and digital camera experiments to discover simultaneous contrast, colour constancy and the limits of screens and vision.

Scientific foundations
Develop an applied understanding of light, wavelength, human vision, RGB additive colour, CMYK subtractive colour and perceptual colour spaces.

The design sandbox
Apply these principles through guided experiments, colour-mixing challenges, accessibility tasks and real design briefs.

Rather than relying on a static colour wheel or punitive right-and-wrong grading, Colour Studio encourages observation, comparison and reflection. Diagnostic feedback explains how surrounding colours, luminance and visual adaptation influence each decision.

The interface is informed by Don Norman’s human-centred design principles. Clear signifiers, natural mapping, anticipatory guidance, reference anchors and meaningful constraints help learners understand what actions are possible and what their results will be.

Learning areas include:

Colour relativity and simultaneous contrast

Additive and subtractive colour systems

The biology of colour vision

Camera processing and screen-based colour

CIELAB colour relationships

Contrast and accessible interface design

Reflective design exercises

Evidence-based completion rewards

Colour Studio connects academic theory with perception, physical experimentation and responsible design practice. It helps learners build a more accurate mental model of colour - one grounded in observation, material behaviour and human experience.
