WHAT IS NOVA?
NOVA groups every food into one of four categories:
  • NOVA 1 — Unprocessed or minimally processed (fresh fruit, meat, eggs)
  • NOVA 2 — Culinary ingredients (olive oil, butter, salt, sugar)
  • NOVA 3 — Processed foods (canned goods, cheese, cured meats)
  • NOVA 4 — Ultra-processed foods (soft drinks, packaged snacks, ready meals)
Ultra-processed foods (NOVA 4) are scientifically linked to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. CleanPlate makes it effortless to identify them before they go in your basket.
