EDUCATIONAL DEPTH

Konjugieren goes beyond simple conjugation tables. Each conjugationgroup includes detailed articles explaining formation, usage, and historical context, with literary examples from Goethe, Kafka, Mann, the Grundgesetz, and the Luther Bible. Every verb ships an example sentence, most of them drawn from published German writing.

Deep Etymologies

Trace each verb to its roots, nearly all the way to Proto-Indo-European, with cognates from English, Latin, Greek, Gothic, and Old Norse. Browse seven ways: strong, weak, mixed, -ieren, separable, inseparable, and by ablaut group.

Conjugate with confidence. Learn German verbs the right way.

A PERSONAL TRIBUTE

Konjugieren was created by Josh Adams as a tribute to his grandfather, Clifford August Schmiesing (1904–1944).

Cliff was born in Minster, Ohio, a town where German was the language of daily life. All four of his grandparents had immigrated from Germany, and he grew up steeped in that heritage, attending public schools taught by German-speaking nuns. He became a doctor, specializing in obstetrics.

When America entered World War II, Cliff served as an Army doctor, treating soldiers wounded in North Africa, Sicily, and Southern Italy. He died in Oran, Algeria, on January 21, 1944. Josh's mother, Ryan, was just fourteen months old.

Though Ryan never truly knew her father, Cliff's love for his family has echoed through the generations. Konjugieren honors Cliff and the language he and his ancestors spoke: German.
