当提到日本料理时，许多人会联想到寿司，这种日本人自己发明的食物就是“和食”；另外，源自中国的日式拉面、源自印度的日式咖喱、源自法国的日式欧姆蛋（蛋包饭）、源自意大利的日式那不勒斯风意大利面等等，这些外国来的就被称为“日式洋食”，发源地虽然不是日本，但经过日本人的改造而成为日本料理的一种。其中日本改造过的中国菜（日式拉面、日式煎饺、天津饭、唐扬鸡块等），又因为中国不属于西洋，所以直接叫作“日式中华料理”。
