## Description

Fugue Machine Rubato is a time-bending MIDI sequencer that turns a single grid into a multi-dimensional musical canvas. It introduces time-bending playheads, a robust automation system, and a nonlinear engine that lets time accelerate, decelerate, freeze, or reverse, while notes sweep, strum, and bounce with expressive motion.

With up to eight playheads, per-playhead echoes, multiple MIDI outputs, and a library of built-in patterns, you can route, layer, and sculpt complex textures using curves, envelopes, and shapes. The app supports touch, keyboard, and cursor control, ships with per-playhead Drum Trigs for drums, and includes auto-saved snapshots and nestable pattern folders for rapid iteration.

## Review summary

Fugue Machine Rubato is praised for its deep, unique MIDI sequencing and true polyrhythms, output quality, and cross-app MIDI capabilities. Recurrent drawbacks include missing MIDI import and randomization features, a 128-step limit plus limited scales/tuning, sparse documentation, and UI readability concerns. Overall it’s seen as a powerful, innovative tool for advanced users, with several popular feature gaps repeatedly requested by the community.

### Pros

- Deep, unique MIDI sequencer with near-bottomless complexity
- True polyrhythm/polymeter support enabling intricate timing
- High-quality output and strong generative/creative potential
- Robust MIDI routing/output and cross-app compatibility (Cubasis, Logic Pro on iPad)
- Stable, elegant, and universal app that is powerful yet approachable

### Cons

- Missing MIDI file import and limited randomization options
- 128-step sequence cap and limited scales/tuning options
- Sparse documentation/manual and a steeper learning curve
- UI/readability issues on dark interface (small gray text on black)
- Lack of bend/glissando/pitch-bend support for expressive notes
