## Description

**Carbs & Cals: Diet & Diabetes** is a visual food tracker and calorie counter designed to simplify nutrition, weight management and diabetes tracking. Scan barcodes, food labels or meals with the Unified Food Scanner, then quickly log calories, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, fat, sugar, salt and other nutrients.

Search more than 272,000 UK foods and drinks, compare portion sizes, track weight progress, set goals for weight loss, keto or low-carb diets, and record glucose, insulin and meal notes. Developed by NHS dietitians, the app also lets users share nutrition and progress reports with their healthcare team. A free Starter plan is available, with a 14-day trial of the Unlimited plan.

## Rankings

## Review summary

Reviewers largely agree the app's carb-counting concept is useful, aided by visuals, and has helped some users with diabetes management and weight loss. However, the majority cite a weak, Europe-centric food database, missing common US foods, no barcode scanner, high price, and poor maintenance or stability (outdated updates, iOS issues, and crashes), which undermine overall usability.

### Pros

- Helps count carbs and track intake
- Visual/picture-based portion guidance aids understanding
- Aids diabetes management and has supported weight loss for some users
- The idea is solid and potentially useful for carb-focused dieting

### Cons

- Limited food database with many common items missing
- Not US-centric: Europe-focused data, metric measurements, few US foods
- Expensive / overpriced for the feature set
- Lacks barcode scanner and robust exercise logging (no duration/time entry)
- Outdated/unstable maintenance: few updates, OS compatibility issues, and crashes
