## Description

Pawnbarian is a turn-based puzzle roguelike where you wield a deck of chess-piece cards to guide your hero through tiny dungeons. Plan each move, outmaneuver monsters with unique abilities, and conquer emergent tactical puzzles in bite-sized, 15–30 minute runs.

The demo is ad-free and includes a single character and dungeon. No permanent upgrades—progress comes from mastering the elegant systems. Spend treasure to upgrade cards, explore six characters across three dungeons, and test your limits in the infinite Gauntlet; unlock the full game with a single IAP.

## Review summary

Pawnbarian is praised for its unique blend of chess and roguelike mechanics, offering a fresh puzzle-driven experience with a strong concept, addictive replayability, and diverse character/enemy options. Players enjoy the offline, ad-free design and feel the full game offers good value for its modest price. However, reviewers repeatedly note constraints: a small amount of maps and levels leading to repetition; mixed feelings about price and paywalls or deceptive marketing; balance and late-loop difficulty issues; and onboarding problems such as unclear tutorials and occasional input glitches. Overall, it’s engaging but could use more content and smoother progression.

### Pros

- Unique chess-based roguelike mechanics with depth and a twist on chess.
- Addictive, replayable gameplay with diverse characters, enemies, and dungeons.
- No ads and overall good value for money (affordable price for the full game).
- Polished visuals and sound design that support the concept.

### Cons

- Limited content: only a few maps/dungeons and limited variety leading to repetition.
- Monetization/paywall concerns: paying for the full game, perceived deception about free/demo, and confusing buying flow.
- Balancing/difficulty and design issues: late-game loops feel forced, some character/stage combos tedious, punishing mechanics (blight).
- Onboarding and controls issues: unclear tutorials/explanations and occasional input glitches.
