## Description

Standard Notes is a private and secure end-to-end encrypted notes app that syncs your notes across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and web browsers. Private means your notes are end-to-end encrypted, so only you can read them; even we can't read your notes.

This simple, long-lasting notes solution emphasizes security and longevity. It offers unlimited devices and notes, tagging, pin/lock with biometric options, offline access, and optional paid editors (Markdown, code, spreadsheets) plus themes and encrypted backups to cloud services. Standard Notes is open-source and uses industry-leading XChaCha-20 encryption, inviting public audit and trust.

## Review summary

Standard Notes is praised for strong security (E2EE) and reliable cross‑device syncing, plus solid self-hosting options and a clean UI. However, reviews repeatedly flag steep pricing for paid features, a limited free tier lacking rich text formatting, and recurring login issues on iOS. Mobile typing can be hindered by the on-screen keyboard overlay. Overall, users value its privacy and syncing capabilities, but price and accessibility (especially on mobile) are common complaints.

### Pros

- End-to-end encryption built-in and a privacy-focused design.
- Excellent cross-device syncing with real-time updates across platforms.
- Strong support for self-hosting and data control (Docker, etc.).
- Clean, distraction-free UI that’s easy to use.

### Cons

- High price for premium features; free tier offers limited formatting and many users consider the subscription costly.
- Login/sign-in issues, especially on iOS, with occasional sign-in bugs.
- Mobile typing UX can be obstructed by the keyboard overlay, making drafting notes frustrating.
