## Description

HoloGrid: Monster Battle AR is the ARKit-powered reimagining of the award-winning board-game experience by HappyGiant and Tippett Studio. This free-to-play title blends Collectible Card Game (CCG) mechanics with chess-inspired strategy in an immersive AR battle, bringing the board game to life.

Created in collaboration with Academy Award–winning VFX director Phil Tippett, it introduces new monsters, spells, arenas, and a competitive ranked matchmaking system. A reinvented AR strategy game inspired by HoloChess, it nods to Star Wars while delivering a fresh, next-generation AR experience.

## Rankings

- #104,210 — Overall

## Review summary

Players praise HoloGrid as a visually impressive AR board game with a fun, strategic premise and a Star Wars-like vibe. However, recurring issues drag down the experience: frequent crashes and freezes, especially around chests and startup; long chest unlock times and monetization pressure; bugs that make boards float or units disappear and confusing controls; performance problems including heat and battery drain; and balance/matchmaking concerns, plus non-live battles. Overall, the concept is strong and engaging when it runs, but reliability and pacing need attention.

### Pros

- Immersive AR board-game concept with strong visuals
- Addictive and strategic gameplay when it runs well
- Engaging Star Wars-like holochess vibe that fans may enjoy
- Active developer support and responsiveness to issues

### Cons

- Frequent crashes/freezes during gameplay (on open, chest, or after a minute of play)
- Chest-based progression with long unlock times and pay-to-accelerate options
- Gameplay and UI bugs, such as the board floating, units not appearing, and tricky controls
- Performance and device heat/battery drain during play
- Imbalanced matchmaking and progression (opponents too strong, non-live battles)
