This app measures nearby electromagnetic fields using the phone's built-in magnetometer compass. The magnetic field level in nature is about 30~60μT. If there is any metal in the area, the strength of the magnetic field should increase.It is possible to detect the metal in such principles.

Open this app on your device, and move it around. The magnetic field values will constantly fluctuate. That's it!
