## Description

The athenaCapture mobile app and its supporting athenaNet workflows provide a simple, secure way for users to add image documentation into athenaNet via smartphone or tablet device. Supported workflows currently include:

- Simple image documentation capture
- Encounter embedded image documentation capture
- Patient photo capture
- Insurance card capture

Images pass directly from the point of capture — athenaCapture — to athenaNet, and are never stored unsecured, e.g., in a device camera roll, a memory card inserted into a camera, etc., without manual intermediate steps.

## Rankings

- #207,329 — Overall

## Review summary

athenaCapture is valued for its high‑resolution, HIPAA‑compliant photo uploads into athenaNet and its mobile convenience that speeds in‑chart documentation and after‑hours checks. When it works, clinicians praise the workflow improvements over browser use. However, reliability is a major issue: crashes, inconsistent photo quality, slow or incomplete uploads, and limited options to use existing device photos. Additional friction from QR-code workflow and device compatibility further hampers adoption. Overall, reliability is the key barrier to consistent value.

### Pros

- High-resolution, HIPAA-compliant photo uploads into athenaNet
- Improves clinical workflow by quickly documenting photos in a patient's chart
- Convenient mobile photo capture and access to patient information (including after-hours checks)

### Cons

- Frequent crashes and blank screens (launch and during use)
- Photo/camera quality issues (blurry images, poor focus on documents, unreliable scanning)
- Upload problems (delayed uploads, no offline/queue support, cannot upload existing photos from device)
- Workflow friction (requires QR-code workflow, extra clicks, difficulty selecting patient/in labeling photos)
- Incompatibility with some iOS versions/devices (e.g., iPad/iOS 15) and variable internet speeds
