Uses specially-produced Dolby Atmos surround tracks with on-screen 3D graphics

Designed by guitarist and immersive audio producer Jeff Perrin as a means to confirm the integrity of various surround systems while producing surround sound music tracks.

NOTE: Playback of test content on speakers requires an Apple TV (or similar AirPlay-compatible streaming device) connected to a Dolby Digital-compatible home theater system. Spatial audio support over headphones requires compatible iOS device with Dolby Atmos-compatible AirPods or Dolby Atmos-compatible headphones. When played back over an optical connection or non-Atmos devices, surround content will fold down to Dolby Digital 5.1 or stereo 2.0 format, depending on device capabilities. In all cases, a fast internet connection is highly recommend.

*Playback of Dolby Atmos content on non-Apple devices requires that the device supports multichannel audio (ie. Dolby Digital 5.1 or Atmos) over AirPlay 2. Please check your device specifications. Please try out the free included test tracks so as to ensure compatibility with your hardware before making any purchases.

## Review summary

Surround Speaker Check is valued for testing and calibrating surround setups and works well with Apple TV/AirPlay, with users noting natural-sounding results and helpful companion functionality. The paid content is seen as valuable by enthusiasts. However, reliability concerns (subwoofer test issues, restore purchases bugs, tvOS/DD5.1 compatibility) and pricing are frequent negatives, along with a lack of in-app documentation for test cues.

### Pros

- Very effective for testing and calibrating surround speakers and levels, with users noting more natural, dynamic sound after calibration.
- Strong Apple TV/iOS integration and AirPlay compatibility, helping verify setups and enabling cross-device calibration.
- Subscription offers extra demos and video/blog content that serious home-theater enthusiasts value.
- Notable improvement in sound quality for older or basic speakers.

### Cons

- Subwoofer test is inconsistent/incomplete; early tests don’t exercise the subwoofer and later tests sometimes fail to produce audio.
- Recurring subscription price is high; many users prefer a one-time payment.
- Restore purchases bug after reinstall; unable to restore center test purchase.
- Compatibility issues with newer tvOS and Dolby Digital 5.1 passthrough; DD5.1 no longer works.
- Lack of documentation for test results/colors (e.g., red vs blue center test), causing user confusion.
