h265ify

Enables HEVC support on Edge

h265ify is a Microsoft Edge extension that enables HEVC (H.265) video playback by activating Edge's built-in but hidden HEVC support. Without this extension, Edge does not report HEVC capabilities to websites, causing unnecessary video transcoding and suboptimal quality.

By installing h265ify, users can enjoy higher-quality streams at lower data rates on popular web-based media centers such as Plex, Emby, and streaming platforms like Netflix. This extension enhances video streaming efficiency and reduces bandwidth consumption by allowing direct playback of HEVC-encoded videos within Microsoft Edge.

User reviews

Users generally find h265ify helpful for enabling HEVC playback on Edge, particularly for YouTube content, improving video smoothness and reducing CPU usage. However, it has inconsistent support, failing on some platforms like Plex and Jellyfin, breaking Twitter video playback, and not supporting certain cloud-stored videos. Some users must purchase additional HEVC support from Microsoft Store for full functionality. Overall, the extension is useful but has compatibility limitations and does not fully solve all HEVC playback issues.
Pros
  • Helps fix playback issues on Edge when combined with HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
  • Works well with YouTube and improves CPU performance by reducing processing load.
  • Enables smoother viewing of 4K videos on YouTube, particularly noted by users from China.
Cons
  • Does not work consistently across all platforms; Plex still transcodes to x264 despite the add-on.
  • Breaks video playback on Twitter, possibly due to native Edge support conflicting with the extension.
  • Fails to enable playing certain HEVC files like GoPro videos stored on OneDrive clouds.
  • Does not work with some media servers (e.g., Jellyfin with ESXi Synology) and requires fallback to H264 transcoding.

Seemed to fix my playback issues, for windows I had to purchase `HEVC Video Extensions` from the microsoft store for $1 to enable h265/hevc playback on my device. This store extensions addon alone fixed chrome but for edge I have to use this plugin and it seems to work fine.

Still not working for me (in Plex, at least). Plex still transcodes to x264 at highest quality
