Alfred Edmund Brehm (born February 2, 1829 in Unterrenthendorf, today Renthendorf, † November 11, 1884 ibid) was a German zoologist and writer. Through the book title Brehm's Life of Animals, his name became a synonym for popular scientific zoological literature.
Brehm's essays and travel reports with the richly embellished descriptions of the animal world were very well received by large sections of the educated middle class, so that the publisher Herrmann Julius Meyer had already ordered a large, multi-volume work on the animal kingdom from Brehm for the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen in 1860. The first six volumes of The Life of Animals appeared between 1863 and 1869 and made him known worldwide.
Brehms books have been read and translated into many other languages for more than 100 years.
