There's no central Freizone service you sign up for — instead, you connect to a Freizone server run by you, by someone you trust, or by any operator whose server you choose to join. Every message is encrypted on your device before it's sent, so whichever server carries it can never read it.

WHY FREIZONE IS DIFFERENT

• No central provider. Freizone isn't a company running a chat service — it's software anyone can run. You pick the server, or run your own.
• Real end-to-end encryption. Messages are encrypted using X3DH and the Double Ratchet, the same well-established techniques behind other trusted secure messengers. Your server stores and forwards ciphertext — nothing more.
• Self-certifying identity. Your account address is derived from your own device's key, not assigned by a server. That means no server can quietly swap in a different key without it being detectable — you're not just trusting the operator's word.
• Federation, done directly. Message someone on a different Freizone server and your app talks straight to their server — never relayed through your own. Both sides independently verify each other's identity.
• Open source. The app and server are both public and auditable, not a black box.

• Multi-account: stay connected to several servers or identities at once, with a quick account switcher.
• Invite QR codes: join a server or add a contact by scanning a code instead of typing long addresses.
• Message requests: a first message from someone new shows as a request before it lands in your chat list, so you decide who reaches you.
• Message actions: reply with a quoted preview, pin important messages, and delete messages for yourself.
• Peer profiles: an editable local nickname and per-contact block/unblock, right from the conversation.
• Push notifications without a Google dependency: Freizone prefers UnifiedPush, an open, no-Google-account-needed delivery system, with Firebase Cloud Messaging available as a fallback. Either way, the push itself carries no message content or metadata — just a signal to check for new messages.
• Server admin tools: if you run or help moderate a server, manage registration policy, invite codes, user roles, and federation settings right from the app.
• Short address alias: look people up by a short 5-character id instead of the full address.

HOW IT WORKS

When you open Freizone for the first time, you'll be asked which server to connect to — your own, one belonging to someone you trust, or any public instance you know of. Setting up your own server takes a few minutes with the open-source freizone-server software and a small amount of hosting; it's the same trust model as running your own email or file server. Prefer not to run one yourself? Ask someone who already does.

A NOTE ON HOW THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM MOST CHAT APPS

Because there's no single Freizone service, the people you want to talk to need to be reachable — either on the same server as you, or on a federated one. This is a deliberate trade-off: it's what makes it possible for no single company to ever hold your conversations, your contact graph, or your metadata. If that trade-off matters to you, Freizone is built for exactly this.

Freizone is under active development.
