## Description

The Shellback app — formerly eDivo — is a free mobile resource designed specifically for US Naval Surface Force (SURFOR) personnel. It enables Sailors to download and access key leadership and management information offline, ensuring critical resources are always at hand even without internet connectivity. By uniting vital documents and manuals in one place, the app supports training, medical readiness, operations, personnel management, and safety efforts.

Named after the naval tradition marking experienced Sailors who have crossed the Equator, Shellback empowers users with updated manuals like the Correspondence and Training Readiness Manuals, Medical Department guidelines, operational procedures, personnel policies, safety reports, and navigation rules quizzes. Updated annually, this app streamlines essential SURFOR knowledge, enhancing mission readiness and leadership capabilities anywhere, anytime.

## Review summary

Users find Shellback useful for quick naval references but criticize it for slow loading and frequent failures to get past initial disclaimers. The Rules of the Road quiz is widely regarded as unhelpful since it lacks correct answers and feedback. Many complain that references and links are outdated or broken, especially after the update from eDivo to Shellback, which removed previously available content and degraded the app's usability. Overall, it is considered less helpful than its predecessor and other naval apps for study and guidance.

### Pros

- Provides quick access to naval publications and instructions.
- Handy and useful for naval officers for fast reference.
- Good for looking up certain pub references easily.

### Cons

- Very slow to load, often getting stuck at the loading or disclaimer stage (e.g., at 50%).
- Rules of the Road (ROR) quiz is ineffective: it no longer shows correct answers or useful feedback, making it not helpful for study.
- References and links in the app are outdated and broken, often not reflecting updated naval instructions or websites.
- The update from eDivo to Shellback degraded functionality, removing useful content and causing frequent crashes or inability to open the app.
