## Description

adrift is a sleep aid for nights when you can't sleep because your mind won't stop.

If you lie awake with racing thoughts, replaying the day or planning tomorrow, the problem is not that you aren't tired. It is that your brain is still running. adrift gives it something quiet to do instead.

HOW IT WORKS

Open adrift in bed and tap once. A faint letter appears on a dark screen. Calm, unrelated words that start with that letter fade in and out, one at a time: acorn, anchor, apricot. After a few words the letter changes and it starts again. There is no story and no order. Picture each word loosely, let it go, and let the next one arrive.

After a few minutes the images get hazy and hard to hold on to. That is the mind letting go. It is what falling asleep actually feels like.

WHY IT WORKS

The technique is called the cognitive shuffle, and it comes out of sleep research rather than folklore. Studies found the cognitive shuffle settles the wound-up, overthinking feeling that keeps people awake about as well as established clinical treatments for insomnia.

Unrelated words quiet a busy mind. At night the brain slips into planning, problem solving and worrying, and that alertness is exactly what keeps you awake. A stream of random words breaks the loop and takes up just enough attention that anxiety can't get a grip.

They imitate how sleep begins. In the last minutes before you drop off, thought naturally becomes fragmented and a little strange. adrift recreates that on purpose, and your brain reads it as a signal that it is safe to drift deeper.

They beat counting sheep. Counting is so monotonous that your mind wanders back to its worries in the background. Each new word asks for a small, fresh act of imagination instead, enough to crowd out the worry without waking you up.

They take away the pressure to fall asleep. Trying hard to sleep backfires, because you stay alert checking whether it is working. adrift sidesteps that by giving your mind something gentle to move toward.

BUILT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY

While a session runs, adrift keeps your screen from turning off. The screen then dims, slowly enough that you won't notice, until it is fully dark, and the app steps aside so your phone can sleep too. You choose how long the dimming takes and how fast the words arrive. That is the whole settings menu.

No streaks, no stats, no reminders and no notifications. No ads, no account, no sign up, no tracking. It works offline, in airplane mode, with the sound off and with headphones you forgot to take out.

GETTING THE MOST FROM IT

Start a session when you actually want to sleep, not while you are still winding down. Lie in a position you could fall asleep in and hold the phone loosely, or rest it face up beside you on the pillow. If a word drags a memory or a plan along with it, that is normal. Notice it and wait for the next word. If you wake at 3am and can't get back to sleep, start a new session instead of reaching for the news.

adrift asks for no permissions and does not need an internet connection to run.

PRICE

Your first seven nights are free. Nights, not days: they only count when you actually use it. No credit card, no trial to cancel.

After that adrift costs $2, once, and it is yours forever. No subscription.

GOOD FOR

Trouble falling asleep and trouble staying asleep. Insomnia and 3am wake ups. An overactive mind at bedtime. Anxiety and rumination that get louder once the lights are out. Winding down without a feed to scroll. Anyone who has worked through sleep sounds, white noise, guided meditation and breathing apps and needs something that occupies the mind instead of relaxing the body.
