HOW TUNING WORKS

GCEA TUNING — UKULELE STRING NOTES EXPLAINED

Standard ukulele tuning is G4-C4-E4-A4, known as GCEA. The G string (fourth string, closest to your face) is tuned high — it is a re-entrant tuning where the fourth string is higher than the third, which gives the ukulele its characteristic cheerful sound. Each string is shown on screen with its note; tap any string to hear the reference pitch for tuning by ear. The chromatic engine reads whatever pitch it hears, so it also catches a string that has drifted far from pitch and guides it back.

UKULELE TUNER FOR SOPRANO, CONCERT AND TENOR

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles all use standard GCEA tuning — the string lengths differ, but the notes are the same. Baritone ukulele uses DGBE tuning (the same as the top four strings of a guitar), which is in the Pro tier. Low G tuning replaces the re-entrant high G with a low G for a fuller, more guitar-like sound across the fingerboard — also in Pro, along with reference calibration from 432 to 446 Hz for playing alongside ensembles that tune away from standard A440.

High G (re-entrant) gives the bright, twangy ukulele sound. Low G tuning drops the fourth string an octave for a fuller bass range, closer to guitar. Most beginners start on high G.
