◐ Dilution Calculator － a 3-fold dilution is not three parts of water

A 3-fold dilution is one part concentrate to two parts water: three
parts in all, giving 33.333333 %. Add three parts of water and you have
four parts — a 4-fold dilution at 25.000000 %.
The same figure 3, read two ways, differs by 1.333333 times in strength.

That difference is what this app is for.

▪ From the factor － enter a dilution factor, get the strength in % and in ppm, and the ratio
▪ From the amounts － enter concentrate and water, get the factor, the finished amount and the strength
▪ % and ppm － enter a percentage, get ppm and the dilution factor

The first tab also works the other way round. To make 500 mL at 3-fold,
measure 166.666667 mL of concentrate and 333.333333 mL of water.
The water is the amount you want less the concentrate, so the two
figures on screen add back up to exactly what you asked for.

■ "3-fold" and "1:3" are one step apart

A Japanese 3-fold dilution is 33.333333 %. A 1:3 written in English is
25.000000 %. One counts how many times the finished volume is; the other
gives the ratio of concentrate to water. The gap grows as the number
gets smaller: 1.500000 times at 2, and 1.100000 at 10. When you read a
product or a recipe from abroad, check which of the two it means.

■ 1 % is 10,000 ppm

Exactly ten thousand times, and it is the only figure worth remembering.
Move the decimal point four places to the right and a percentage becomes
ppm. 0.1 % is 1,000.00 ppm, 0.05 % is 500.00 ppm, and 5 % is 50,000.00 ppm.

■ Two quick charts

Factors of 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 100 and 1000, with the strength and the
mix for each. Strengths of 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 1 and 5 %, with the ppm and
the factor for each.

■ Six decimal places, on purpose

Strength is shown to six places, far enough that 33.333333 % divided by
25.000000 % comes to 1.333333 on the screen itself. Round them shorter
and the figures on one screen stop agreeing with each other.

■ When it helps

・A label says "3-fold" and you are not sure how much water that is
・You want 500 mL and need to know how much concentrate to measure
・A label abroad says 1:3 and you want to know whether that is the same
・Something is written in ppm and you want it as a percentage

■ What is not here
