User reviews

Users appreciate Free Basics for offering free access to key websites like Wikipedia, aiding knowledge and research without data costs. However, many complain about non-functional or unsupported sites, frequent errors, limited content and service restrictions, and carrier access limitations. The app also suffers from performance issues like slow speeds and low data allowances. Despite this, it remains useful for those with limited internet and continues to serve as a valuable resource especially in regions with restricted data access.
Pros
  • Provides free access to essential websites like Wikipedia, useful for people without internet data.
  • Helpful for students and users who cannot afford regular internet; supports research and learning.
  • Simple and easy to use on various devices including Android and iOS.
  • Allows access to a curated set of free services that provide knowledge and news updates.
  • Free access without data charges on supported carriers.
Cons
  • Many previously supported websites and news sources no longer work or are unsupported.
  • App often displays errors like "something went wrong" and sometimes becomes non-responsive.
  • Restrictions on available sites and features, including limited content and inability to remove unwanted services.
  • Access limited to certain mobile carriers; some users unable to use the app due to network restrictions or unrecognized phone numbers.
  • Low data limits (e.g., 20MB) and slow browsing speeds leading to frustrating user experiences.
Recent reviews
Highly recommend for those who can't afford internet. It is very helpful for me as I use it to keep myself up-to-date about current affairs as well as by Wikipedia, which is completely free, I use to check every kind of information. Sometimes it bugs but that's not so often. It is recommended that some more services should be added. Thanks

I've been using this app for 4 years nw and it's been awesome until 2023 when Free Books by WorldReader stopped showing adult content really it's so frustrating. I did not use the app for close to a year cos i lost my smart phone and on getting a new phone to finally enjoy some of my favourite books then all i find is children content. Pls something should be done about this even if standard data charges apply cos they already do.
