Fruit yield estimation is a task farmers are faced with shortly before every harvesting season in order to determine essential logistics, like how many laborers they need to hire. This app's current version is a prototype for helping farmers estimate fruit yield in Pink Lady apple orchards. It uses a simple apple detection algorithm to detect apples in an image of an apple tree. You may be wondering: How would detecting apples in an image of an apple tree help farmers estimate fruit yield for an apple orchard? It's easy! Once the farmer takes or selects a picture of an apple tree and the number of apples detected is displayed, they can multiply that by a number in order to get an educated estimation of the number of apples on the tree. The number they would multiply the detected apples by would be based on a correlation or relationship found by researchers between apples detected by the algorithm and actual apples on apple trees. Farmers could take pictures of as many trees as they'd like, using the app-assisted estimations to get a fruit yield estimation for an entire orchard. While researchers found a correlation between apples detected by the current algorithm and the actual apples on trees, this correlation will not be provided since this app version is just a prototype and should not be used for estimating fruit yield or any other practical purposes. This means that the developers/publishers of the app are not liable for anything. Future versions of the app will focus on developing a more advanced apple detection algorithm and possibly beginning the development of other detection algorithms. This app could be modified to assist farmers with estimating fruit yield for orchards of different fruits, such as peaches.
