BlackBox is a puzzle game about opening things that were built to stay shut. Each safe is a stack of locks, and every lock is a different problem: a combination dial you turn by hand, a bank of relays that fires an order you have to remember, a contact board to bridge, an etched plate with one glyph turned the wrong way.

Get through every layer and the door swings open. Run out of picks and you walk away with nothing.

FOUR LOCKS, FOUR KINDS OF THINKING

Combination dial - a real dial you drag around with your finger, one digit at a time. Try a code and it tells you how many digits are right and in place, and how many are in the code but somewhere else. Deduce the rest.

Relay sequence - the pads fire in an order. Watch, remember, repeat. Two replays if you need them, and no more.

Contact board - bridge every terminal to the contact of the same colour. Three wrong bridges and the tamper switch fires.

Etched plate - a grid of identical marks with one turned the wrong way, and a clock running down. A wrong tap costs you three seconds.

PICKS ARE YOUR MARGIN

Every run gives you a handful of picks. Fail a layer and you burn one. Burn them all and the job is blown. Finish without spending a single one and the job is clean: three stars.

CHOOSE HOW HARD YOU WANT IT

Every safe can be worked three ways. Quiet gives you five picks, gentle timers and short codes. Standard is the job as it really is. Blind cuts your picks to two, tightens every clock and lengthens every code - and pays three times as much, with better things inside.

THIRTY-SIX SAFES, THREE TIERS

- Back rooms - cheap wall boxes and gun cabinets, two layers each
- Office block - deposit boxes and manager safes, wired properly
- The vault floor - bank-grade doors with every layer they could afford

Layers stack up as you climb: the last tier throws four locks at you in a row.
