User reviews
Simeji Japanese Keyboard is praised for its excellent Japanese typing experience, including accurate kana and kanji input, helpful for learners, and a visually appealing keyboard with many emojis. However, multiple users report difficulties with the English keyboard layout, auto-correct issues, lag and freezing problems, and challenges with language settings. Some crucial features like clipboard and half-space auto-delete after punctuation are missing or removed. Despite these flaws, it remains a favored option among Japanese language users seeking better input methods than standard keyboards.
Pros
- Provides excellent Japanese keyboard with accurate hiragana and kanji recommendations, helpful for learners who are still memorizing kana.
- Offers customizable keyboard themes and a visually pleasant interface with useful features like flick input.
- Handles switching between Japanese and English typing effectively, smoother than some alternatives like Gboard.
- Includes extensive emoji and kaomoji collections, which users appreciate.
- Has useful functionalities such as swipe kana input and multiple language support for Japanese and English users.
Cons
- English keyboard layout is awkward as it follows Japanese QWERTY, making typing and cursor control difficult.
- Auto-correct functionality is sometimes unmanageable, with issues turning it off and poor spell check and predictive text for English.
- Keyboard performance issues such as lagging, freezing or disappearing keys occur, especially in certain apps like YouTube and after updates.
- Users complain about the app language settings lacking proper English support or difficulty switching app language and keyboard language settings back to English.
- Features missing or removed, like clipboard manager, half-space auto-delete after punctuation, and easy switching back to other keyboards (e.g., Gboard).

I've used this app for years, it's the best Japanese keyboard out there. HOWEVER I noticed some of the keyboard themes use AI art. It'd be so easy for Simeji to continue to support & pay artists, but now they're using AI trash for their keyboard themes. It's honestly incredibly disappointing after using this app for so long. Time to find a new keyboard.
