User reviews

Users appreciate Port Authority for its speed, simplicity, and helpfulness in scanning local networks and identifying devices. However, common issues include a frustrating port range selection interface, failure to save discovered hosts info, obsolete database updates causing lookup errors, occasional crashes on newer Android versions, and limited network scanning scope (no Ethernet scanning). Despite these problems, the app remains a useful tool, and the developer is commended for responsiveness.
Pros
  • Fast and effective network scanner for LAN devices.
  • Provides useful information about connected devices, such as vendor details.
  • Simple, straightforward user interface with no unnecessary features.
  • Helpful for network security awareness and troubleshooting.
  • Developer is responsive and knowledgeable.
Cons
  • The app's port range selection interface is cumbersome, requiring scrolling through thousands of ports instead of direct input, leading to poor user experience.
  • Host information and discovered data are not saved, limiting functionalities like Wake-On-LAN.
  • Database lookups for OUI and IANA fail to update due to 404 errors, affecting accuracy.
  • App crashes on some Android versions (e.g., Android 11) especially after updates.
  • No option to scan Ethernet connections; limited to Wi-Fi only.

probably the fastest scanner, but lacks the possibility to change the interface. E.g. if I want to scan a vpn

This app has been a cool resource for securing my home network and opening some eyes at various workplaces I've worked at. However very recently the OUI and IANA port database updates fail with a 404 message. The app still works well but you have to do your own homework now. Maybe Aaron can take a look?
